The caldera of Quilotoa will be one of the most stunning single pieces of scenery you will see on planet earth. Turquois water now fills this extinct volcano and it’s candy for your eyes.
We have a long day, with about 3 hours from Quito to reach the laguna. Along the way, we will panoramic views of the stunning Cotopaxi volcano. (Ask about combining a trip to Cotopaxi for a 2-day tour) Once we arrive at the crater’s rim we will have the option to walk down to the shore of the lagoon. Here there are some optional kayaks available for rent for those interested. The hike back up is steep, and the altitude is no joke. Take your time, find your breath, and find your way back up. The hike up can be 30-40 minutes, or hire a horse to help you out, $10 and you’re up in about 15 minutes.
We will have a hearty lunch to regain our strength. On Thursdays and Sundays, we have the option of checking out some interesting local markets. Time permitting, the guide will discuss with you some options for further exploring the area, including some cultural encounters with the local indigenous community.
