We start out of Quito with a 7 AM pick-up to beat the local traffic out of town. About 1.5 hours from the city we will arrive at Cotopaxi National Park, where we will first visit the interpretation center, giving us a chance to learn a little bit about the area. Laguna Limpiapungo will be our next stop, located 3900 meters above sea level. We can take our time here, capturing some great photos and enjoying a leisurely walk. We will get a chance to see some of the Andean birds.
Afterward, we head to the end of the road, with the Cotopaxi refuge’s final destination. From the parking lot, we will slowly ascend nearly 300 meters to our destination. The refuge is located at 4800m, although the distance is not too far, we take our time when dealing with this altitude. We will enjoy some free time and a warm beverage. We suggest trying the coca tea. On our way back we should have a little extra time to explore, ask the guide to show you some of his favorite spots!
If you join a group biking tour, the descent from the carpark will be by mountain bike. It will take about an hour to reach the lagoon. The biking option usually means forgoing the hike up to the refuge, but let’s see how we are doing on time, we may be able to fit both activities in.
