The Mashpi Lodge Reserve consists of 32,000 acres, spanning over both cloud forest and rainforest. At 900m above sea level, this is one of the most richly biodiverse places on earth. More than 500 different bird species can be spotted in the reserve.
The lodge offers luxurious accommodations, gourmet meals, and first-class service. National Geographic has included Mashpi Lodge in its list of the most unique lodges of the world.
A spa/wellness center incorporates local traditions and remedies, allowing its guests an opportunity to fully relax and allow for the absorption of the forest’s energy.
In additional to providing an interesting employment opportunity, Mashpi works jointly with the local community on conservation and education projects in the area.
You will be picked up at your Quito hotel mid-morning and then enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive to Mashpi Reserve. Upon arrival, we will have an orientation and safety meeting. During this meeting, your guide will review your activity preferences, and set up a personalized itinerary according to your interests. Here are some of the key features and activity options:
A morning departure from your hotel in Quito will quickly have us winding the mountain roads down from the high Andes, arriving to the Mashpi Reserve at 900m. Along the 2.5 hour-drive you will learn a bit about the history and traditions of the area we will be visiting. We will make a stop at the Tulipe ruins, and learn about the Yumbo tribe that once resided in the area.
Upon arrival to the lodge, we will give you a few minutes to settle in and enjoy the amazing views. We will have a brief orientation and safety meeting, enjoy lunch, and then set out for a guided nature hike in the afternoon.
After the hike we can relax at the lodge for a bit, enjoying a cup of tea or a frosty beverage. In the evening we go out for another hike, giving us a chance to observe a changing of the guard, as the nocturnal species are just rolling out of their slumber. We head back to the lodge to enjoy the facilities and have a delicious supper.
Bird watching you say? Let’s head out early, daybreak presents the best viewing opportunities. We will have a top-notch breakfast before climbing the 30-meter observation tower. Here we will be perched amongst the treetops with wide view of the jungle canopy.
We will then zip through the forest via the Sky Bike or the Dragonfly, providing a unique perspective while still searching for a glimpse of a rare species.
In the afternoon we will visit the Wildlife Center. Here we will have a chance to learn about the endemic species of the area. Afterwards, we will stop in at the butterfly grounds. A colorful and relaxing spot!
Again, we will take advantage of the early morning bird viewing opportunities, though this time en route to the Copal Waterfall. These stunning surroundings also give us the chance to view a variety of orchids. Pack your swimsuit if you fancy a swim in the falls! We will have a late-morning departure back to Quito, passing the equator monument along the way.
