This is an excellent prep-summit for those desiring to climb Cotopaxi or Chimborazo, or just as something unique to do whilst visiting Quito. This active volcano hovers over Quito, and the base is easily reached within about 10 minutes from most hotels. The last eruption was in 1999, and it covered the city in ash.
Once we reach the parking lot at the base, we will take the Teleferiqo (gondola) up about another 1000 meters. This is where most tourists enjoy breathtaking views of the city, but we want more! It should take us about two hours to reach the summit of this non-technical hike. Although no special equipment is needed, it is highly advisable to attempt the summit only with an experienced guide.
Acclimate weather can cause disorientation, and conditions can deteriorate quickly. A clear day will provide you with stunning views as a reward, and you will be that much closer to conquering a major summit.
