Chimborazo Summit

Lodge Class

Program Duration

2-3 days

Activity Level

Ecuador’s highest peak, and the closest point from the Earth to the Sun. Because of the Earth’s bulge at the Equator, Chimborazo is the furthest point from the planet’s core. This is a technical climb, and is not generally advised for those with no prior mountaineering experience.

Chimborazo Acclimatization Extension
-Estrella del Chimborazo

The Estrella del Chimborazo extension makes for a more relaxed experience, better acclimatization, and increases the chances of a successful summit. Here we will enjoy our first night in a relaxed high-altitude lodge, with home-cooked meals. We will have a chance to do some brief hikes and get familiar with our gear.

Chimborazo Summit

We meet at 8:30AM in Quito for a final gear check and fitting. We have about a two-hour drive to the town of Ambato. Here we will have lunch and then set on the scenic canyon road for the final stretch of the drive. We leave the vehicle at 4800m where we will depart on foot for the Whymper Refuge. This 200 meter ascent will take us about 30 minutes. In the afternoon we well prep for the late night journey, with equipment practice, safety discussion, and route planning. An early supper will be enjoyed followed by an early snooze. We need to rest up for a midnight departure. Hike time: 30-45 minutes Overnight: Refuge Meals included: Lunch & Dinner
Depending on weather conditions, and the experience of the climbers, we will depart the refuge between midnight and 1AM. We plan on arrival to the summit at daybreak. The guide will plan a departure time in accordance with current climbing conditions, as to ensure a safe trek, while arriving at an optimal time to enjoy the morning views and allow enough time to safely return to the refuge. On a clear day the summit offers 360 views of the entire country. Hike time: 8-11 hours Meals included: Lunch & Dinner
