The Caiman Lodge offers all the key elements of a classic Amazon rainforest experience. The accommodations are a little more basic than some of our other options, but still feature private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The grounds are fantastic, with great lounge areas and an on-site observation tower. The guides will help you to discover the magic of the Cuyabeno Nature Reserve, and provide an unforgettable experience.
We meet in Lago Agrio at 9:00AM, with an approximate drive of three hours to the entrance of the reserve, where we will register and enjoy lunch. From here we have a two-hour canoe ride to reach the lodge. Along the way we will begin searching for wildlife, and the guide will share his knowledge of the area’s flora and fauna. After settling in, we will head to a deep-forest lagoon for wildlife observation and a swim.
We will spend the day exploring the trails and waterways of the Amazon. We will start with a hike, where the guide will explain the surroundings, medicinal plants, and inhabitants of the area. These will be optimal conditions for bird-watching and primate observation. In the afternoon we will paddle the lagoons, further searching for wildlife. We will enjoy the sunset and then go searching for caimans.
We will navigate the riverways by canoe, to arrive at the Siona Community. As is customary, one of the indigenous women will welcome us to the village. She will show us the yuca plantation that provides for the community. We then get a chance to participate in the preparation of a traditional meal. We will learn some local customs and hear legends about their people and the forest. In the afternoon we will participate in a shamanic cleansing ritual.
Cuyabeno Lagoon & River Navigation
In the morning we will paddle slowly along the waterways, staying quiet and looking for great photo opportunities of the abundant wildlife. We will have a chance to explore some new trails near the lagoons or back near the lodge. Today is a flexible day, exploring with a naturalist guide according to your preferences. Lounging around the lodge for the afternoon is a great option too, with plenty of nearby wildlife, and a chance to relax when needed.
Lets do some birding at the break of dawn. We will start at 5:30 AM, as early morning gives us the best chance to see the most species. We will have breakfast at 9:30 and then pack up and start our journey back to Lago Agrio to catch your flight or bus to Quito.
